Magnesium L-threonate and sleep quality

A 21-day trial involving 80 adults found differences in certain indicators of sleep and daytime functioning. The study utilized questionnaires and a wearable device.

The study was short-term and did not evaluate Somnus. Data from a wearable device are not equivalent to those from a polysomnography (sleep study). A correction published in 2025 clarified funding and commercial interests.

Cognition, sleep, and variable outcomes

A six-week trial with 100 adults identified differences in certain subjective outcomes. There were no differences between the groups regarding sleep metrics from the Oura Ring or measures of restorative sleep.

The research received commercial funding and does not prove that Somnus induces deep sleep, nor that magnesium L-threonate is superior to other forms for all individuals.

Sleep extension and athletic performance

In a small study involving 11 collegiate basketball players, sleep extension was accompanied by improvements in certain measures of performance and mood.

The study investigated sleep habits without evaluating any supplements. Therefore, these results cannot be attributed to Somnus.
